Co-Creating HVA’s Cancer Performance Indicator

cancer performance indicator collaboration press release Aug 21, 2023

The Health Value Alliance Cancer Performance Indicator:

Developed in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, the Health Value Alliance (HVA) is extremely proud to present the Cancer Performance Indicator, a new model for defining, assessing and showcasing optimal cancer care in the UK and beyond...

A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible. We look forward to the programme developing further over the coming months. The Health Value Alliance (HVA) has brought together key cancer care industry stakeholders from across the world to co-design a new model, the Cancer Performance Indicator. The Cancer Performance Indicator aims to answer the crucial question of what the best cancer care looks like and where it is being delivered. Using insights derived from real-world data, the Cancer Performance Indicator will support a constant drive to improve cancer care quality and patient-centric outcomes.

As the challenges cancer poses increase globally, there is a need for a more cohesive and coherent approach to ensuring optimal cancer outcomes are consistently achieved by all. The Cancer Performance Indicator is an independent international model which will provide a consistent method for assessing cancer care quality and outcomes across the private sector and beyond.

To develop the Cancer Performance Indicator, the Health Value Alliance has brought together key stakeholders from across the world, including patients, clinicians, academics, private medical insurance companies, global pharmaceutical companies, international research, policy developers, diagnostic services, and hospital groups. The aim is to establish a consensus on what the best cancer care looks like and how to measure it.

This innovative new system will support the move towards more transparent cancer care quality, with a standard benchmark for all. The Cancer Performance Indicator will help stakeholders responsible for developing innovation and those delivering cancer care to assess, compare and continually improve cancer outcomes. Additionally, the system will support payers, such as private health insurers, with their increasingly difficult funding decisions.

Ultimately, the Cancer Performance Indicator will help ensure more individuals across the world can access the most optimal and affordable cancer care for them and achieve the best outcomes.

Matt Hickey, CEO, of The Health Value Alliance, said: "Across the world, there is huge variation in cancer service delivery and outcomes. Inefficiency remains rife and access to optimal, personalised, and affordable care continues to be a challenge for many. But the issues facing cancer care are complex and cannot be tackled alone. The Cancer Performance Indicator programme showcases a truly collaborative approach between patients, clinicians and industry thought leaders to ensure wholly patient-centric, evidence-based and affordable care can be accessed by all, and the outcomes that matter most to patients are consistently achieved."

Matt Vardy, Interim CEO, of AXA Health, said: "As a founding partner of the Cancer Performance Indicator programme, we want to help shape and co-design what good cancer care should look like for everyone. We always keep our members at the heart of what we do and try to find new and innovative ways to ensure they get the best treatment and support. We hope that innovations such as this will lead to positive changes for all cancer patients in the UK and beyond.

"The development of the Cancer Performance Indicator helps ensure both insurers and members make informed choices, based on data and feedback. We look forward to the programme developing and expanding throughout this year."

Dr Cathy Cale, Spire Healthcare's Group Medical Director, said: "Spire Healthcare is committed to working with leading partners and clinicians across the independent healthcare sector to deliver outstanding cancer care to our patients.
